Frequently Asked Questions
Do you have to be my hairdresser to purchase hair replacement like a topper or Halo?
Absolutely not! We can look at what you currently have and match it without knowing what your hairdresser is using.
What if I change my hair color and my hair piece doesn’t match or blend?
We have many clients that change their look seasonally. Since there are limitations on what can be done to a hair system, we recommend you build your hair wardrobe and have a variety of colors for seasonal changes.
My hair is already thin. Will my clipped-in topper cause more damage to my fragile hair?
When used and cared for correctly, a hair topper should not significantly damage fragile hair. Our hair toppers are designed to be lightweight and should not put excessive strain on your natural hair. When properly fitted, they can minimize tension, reducing the risk of damage. If you feel any tension it is because your hair piece needs to be adjusted on your scalp and biological hair. Every hair piece should feel very comfortable.
What is the difference between a topper and full size wig?
A topper is designed to cover specific areas of thinning or hair loss typically at the top of the head or crown, while a full size wig provides complete coverage of the entire head. Toppers blend with your existing hair and add volume or length where needed. They are secured by clips or are bonded to the top of your head. Toppers range from very small (about the size of two fingers) up to the size of a baseball hat. There is a wide variety of base designs and hair types providing many options when selecting a piece that’s right for you.
What is a Halo, and how is it different from a topper or wig?
A halo is multiple wefts of hair sewn together to be worn at the base of your head close to your occipital bone. The wefts are secured to your head using a clear wire that sits about 2-3 inches from your hairline causing it to feel like a comfortable extension headband.
Will people be able to tell I’m wearing a hair piece?
At Erin Kelly Salons, our goal is to make your hair piece look as realistic to your natural hair as possible. For example, we will not suggest something thick piece if you have biologically fine hair. We take into consideration your density, curl patter, and texture when customizing a hair piece for you.
Can I shampoo and curl my hair piece like I do with my own hair?
Yes, you absolutely can! We will cover proper care and maintenance at your appointment ensuring you understand how to properly care for your hair piece and get the most longevity out of it. We suggest you have Erin Kelly Salons service your hair piece for you. This needs to be done every 1-3 months depending on how often you are wearing it.
How do I have my hair piece serviced by Erin Kelly Salons?
We know your hair system is an investment and will take great care of it! All you do is drop it off and we will shampoo, mask, and style it for you. This process takes about a week depending on availability.
How long will my hair piece last?
Proper care, maintenance, and how often it is worn will determine how long a hair piece will last. Normal factors such as heat, humidity, and wind will affect your hair system. Generally a hair piece will last you 12-18 months.
Should I have dirty hair at my color appointment?
If you’re scheduled for a color appointment, please arrive with relatively clean hair. Product and oil build up create a barrier making it harder to color. If you use a root cover spray, please wash it out before your appointment.
